Simon needs to press forward, because he’s become an upstanding man who is confident, kind, and empathetic to and respectful of all of mankind. He’s afraid, so he tries to hide back with his bro and relive a simpler time.īut Kamina and the deceased members of Team Gurren show up in the labyrinth to remind Simon that running from his problems to live some idealized life is a worthless fantasy. Despair so great that it causes him to find comfort back with Kamina in the interdimensional labyrinth. For now, my focus is on Simon.Īnd Simon feels the despair of that ocean. But those are all essays for another time. Some excellent character arcs are resolved (Yoko and Kittan), spiral power reaches a cumulative definition, and the stories of every member of Dai-Gurren Dan literally and metaphorically unite to form a giant ass robot, because in TTGL, all of humanity must work together to find victory. This section of TTGL is difficult to talk about with specific focus on Simon, given how much of the show’s core themes and message can be found here. Simon has learned how to be confident and knows who he is fighting for and what his actions mean for all of mankind, but does he have enough faith in humanity and himself to overcome an enemy that is pessimism realized?Ī lot of Team Dai-Gurren Dan dies in the fight, and the survivors find themselves literally sinking into an ocean of hopelessness. The enemy can be anywhere at any time and is armed with weaponry that alters probability. Gurren Lagann is a tale about all of mankind working together with optimism and gusto to do the impossible, and Simon at last realizes the importance of all people on the eve of the final battle.Īnd at last, the final battle arrives. Through the challenges he faces attempting to water a budding world, his eyes are opened to the experiences of others and the value of perspectives beside his own. Simon discovers through the politics arc that being Simon the Digger, warrior who digs to the heavens for himself, has some seriously negative ramifications. He couldn’t have done it without all of those on the team alongside him. Simon was battling for a dream bigger than himself. This was not the battle of a guy wanting to claim the surface because it belonged to him, but to humanity. ![]() Humanity wins the day because Simon believed in himself and accepted the love and support of those at his side. He understands the weight of his task, and is only able to prevail through human connection. His relations with Kamina, Yoko, and Nia caused him to believe in himself. She made Simon appreciate himself, and inspired him to take steps to save her life in her darkest moments, restoring his confidence.Īt this point, Simon has become a fully fleshed out individual. , and, given the fact that his weakness to the temptress killed Kamina, Simon was feeling more worthless than ever.Įnter Nia. Her alluring body distracted the Digger, and her relationship with Kamina caused Simon to lose focus during the battle on the Dai-Gunzan. “Believe in the you that believes in yourself.” He was chastised by Yoko for his rash behavior, but he pressed on. He advanced forward, heedless of the warnings of his allies. To understand the extent of Simon’s evolution, one has to reflect on where it all began: with Kamina, in the underground. He changed not into his brother, but into someone more. Simon the Digger witnessed a lot of things. Or just carry on straight through this essay to get a more general overview.
